Your Questions About Essential Fatty Acids For Dogs

George asks…

Which grains are good for dogs?

I have 3 questions, the first is the topic, but the other is this: my 10 week old pup has really dry skin. What can I do to help her? She’s a husky mix and was born outside and lived outside until I brought her home. I know putting olive oil on her food is supposed to help. Is there any other oils with essential fatty acids anyone can suggest? And would oatmeal (unprocessed) be okay to feed her once in awhile? Oh! And bee pollen; is local bee pollen good for dogs? The lady at the natural grocery store says its full of vitamins and minerals; she takes it herself and also gives some to her dogs.
The puppy just went to the vet last week. They said her dry skin is due to the cold weather and they recommended a bio-shampoo and olive oil. It seems to works well.
when I said “unprocessed” I meant non-instant oats. The oatmeal gets cooked, usually with beef broth as a substitute for plain water. I don’t feed a lot of it, just enough mixed in with the dry food to keep the dogs attention on their own bowl.

Joy answers:

Peanut Oil helps a lot more than olive oil I have found.
I would feed rice instead of oatmeal (if you are trying to firm up stools or something, otherwise I don’t see why it would be needed) As I just stated, only feed it if there is a purpose such as firming up stool.

Edit: I have just done a bit of research and feeding bee pollen is supposed to be one of those homoeopathic type remedies. (Ingest local pollen to build immune system to allergens in that area) I am still sceptical that it works as the same was said to be true for humans.

I have to comment on this too:
“Get one written by a vet or pet nutritionist. ”
NO, get one written by a pet nutritionist if it has to do with nutrition. Vets typically don’t know the first thing about dog nutrition except that the dog food brand that pays them the most is the “best”
