Organic FoodsWe all know that we should be eating plenty of fruit and vegetables, but as people become more informed about the dangers of pesticides and fertilizers, the interest in organic produce grows.

It seems, at first sight, as if “organic” is a new craze, but in fact it’s not. It’s a return to the traditional methods used by our fore-fathers. And, coincidentally (or not!), people fed by foods produced using these traditional methods were slimmer, had more energy and suffered from fewer diseases such as cancer.

So, you could quite easily go to the supermarket and buy organic vegetables. But, have you noticed that they’re more expensive than the “mass produced” section?

Of course, this reflects the higher care involved in production, and also the better nutritional value.

But in these days of “credit crunch” and recession, to save this extra cost, why not turn over a section of your garden to an organic garden of your own?

If you have no garden, approach your local council to ask about an allotment. Or even ask a neighbor with an unkempt garden if you can use theirs. You may be pleasantly surprised.

As well as being cost-saving and health-producing, gardening is great exercise, and can be a family activity to involve every-one. Starting with choosing what to grow, through all the stages down to eating the finished product!
